Mentor matters & Golfing chatter

Weeknote #51 (20 - 26 April 2026)

· Weeknote

It was a weird week. Something was amiss but I couldn't put my finger on it. Whatever it was, it affected my output and enthusiasm in more-or-less equal amounts.

In a week of not getting much done, here are the highlights.

Had a call with a recruiter about a cool job. We both decided that it was not for me. (There was a 'nice to have' in the job specification that turned out to be a 'must have'.) Not a complete waste of time, but had it been a week where I was more energised, I would be feeling mightily pissed off at the time I wasted on prep and research.

Published "The Gap Between the Plan and the Person" about how a good mentor should learn just as much from a progress review as the mentee, and "Poem: Connection" which is a BTS look at a poem from the forthcoming book, "Earworms and Emotions".
Also started working on a post about the rise of the Generalist, and why they've always been necessary in successful business, but only lately identified as such.

The real, actual highlight of the week was Wednesday, when I gatecrashed(*) the charity golf tournament organised by my ex-colleagues at Comparison Creator. I had a great day catching up with old friends and I even got to play a couple of shots - first time playing for a couple of years - before leaving it to the more practiced crew. First time I'd been to The Vale Resort and it was a lovely place to hold the event, and the staff were amazing.

The high of Wednesday was wiped out by the low of Thursday. I think I just miss the people, and getting out and about. Spending my days in my home office, rarely talking to anyone is not good for me. I must get out to more events and socials.

My listening highlights this week:

  • TOMORA "Come Closer" album.
  • Maddie Ashman "Her Side" album.

On the list for next week:

  • M.I.A. "MI7" new album
  • Nine Inch Nails and Boys Noize "Nine Inch Noize" album

(*) I was invited but, not working there any more, I felt like a bit of an interloper.
