A Week of gaps & a Dearth of naps

Weeknote #36 (5 - 11 January 2026)

· Weeknote

First full week back at ‘not being on holiday’. I'm already missing my afternoon naps.

Quite a productive week in terms of writing:

  • Wrote 2 articles expanding on the talk I gave last year about bridging the gap between strategy and its delivery - “Mind the gap: Why strategy gets lost in execution” & “Mind the gap: How to translate strategy into execution” - which I’ll publish over the next couple of weeks.
  • Wrote a personal reflective piece - “Don’t call it a snake” - to be published this week or next.

Made some progress on both books:

  • I wrote a poem - “Sycamore Gap” which, like most of my poems, is not about what it sounds like it’s about. This will be published in book 1 later this year. (Assuming I can write more poems.)
  • Made some progress on the poem commentaries / personal history for book 2.

On the music front, I did some field recordings (lots of rain falling on various surfaces) to plug into Life, by XLN Audio. I was trying to get some lo-fi beats for a track, and it’s turned out quite well.

Most interesting on the reading front was an article about Chesterton’s Fence, and how it doesn't quite capture the barriers to organisational change, by Matt Ballantine, the outcome of which is something that will forever now be known (to me, at least) as “Ballantine’s Hedge”.

Watched:

  • Binge-watched Linley - first series. Personally, I didn’t find it too bad.
  • His & Hers, first 2 episodes of series 1. I think that this is going to grow - either into something completely chaotic and over-complicated, or into a compelling watch. Not sure which just yet.

Listened to:

  • SNOG - “Babes in Consumerland” album. I needed to listen to 'Apocolypse Fatigue' - quitetly calming and a bit of a mind cleanse after a long bout of writing.
  • Mei Semones - “Animaru” album. Another great album. Very chill.
  • Kit Sebastian - “New Internationale” album.
